Curriculum
English Department: A Customised Curriculum for Every Learner
Our English Department is committed to nurturing confident, curious, and empathetic communicators through a thoughtfully designed, student-centred curriculum. Grounded in the national STELLAR (STrategies for English Language Learning And Reading) programme, we customise teaching approaches, learning experiences and resources to meet the needs of our learners while strengthening language and reading skills through research-based strategies and age-appropriate texts.
AndREAD
We believe that strong readers become strong thinkers. Our AndREAD initiative sets a positive tone each morning with dedicated, uninterrupted reading time for both students and staff. This shared reading culture models the joy and value of reading across the school community.
To deepen engagement, students participate in regular library visits and extended reading activities such as reflections, discussions, and creative responses. These experiences broaden their exposure to diverse texts while strengthening comprehension and critical thinking skills.
A Tailored Curriculum to Excite Every Learner
Recognising that learners develop at different paces and in different ways, our curriculum is carefully differentiated across levels:
Lower Primary – Sparking Curiosity
Young learners are immersed in hands-on, experiential activities that ignite curiosity and build foundational language skills. Through storytelling, play-based learning, and interactive tasks, students develop confidence in expressing themselves.
Middle Primary – Inquiry and Expression
Students are guided to ask questions, conduct research, and present their findings. This phase emphasises critical thinking, collaboration, and effective communication, empowering students to articulate ideas with clarity and purpose.
Upper Primary – Self-Directed Learning and Real-World Connections
As learners mature, they take greater ownership of their learning. Students engage in self-directed projects, explore real-world issues, and refine their ability to analyse, evaluate, and communicate perspectives. This prepares them for future academic challenges and responsible citizenship.
Competitions and Enrichment Opportunities
To complement classroom learning, the department offers a range of competitions and enrichment programmes. These platforms provide students with valuable exposure, allowing them to apply their skills in authentic contexts. Whether through writing competitions, public speaking events, or language-based workshops, students develop resilience, creativity, and a deeper appreciation for the English language.
